Mer De Glace   Mer De Glace, Chamonix, France

I must admit I have always wanted to see inside one of these ice caverns and witness for myself the beauty of the blue compressed ice. Thus far this is the closest I have got to seeing the effect. It isn't alas a natural phenomenon here in the Mer De Glace one of Mont Blanc Massif most impressive glacial flows it has been hollowed out by tunnel digging paraphernalia for the benefit of tourists. The effect though is not lost on me. Looking out of the tunnel you can see the end of the 500 steps it now takes to reach the glacier floor a very thorough indication of the current global warming phenomena.
