Running Events: Cross Country: Schools Cross Country 2015

The school cross country events are some of the most important in the junior calendar and the schools in Forres are particularly keen to see their pupils well represented, both at primary and secondary level. It starts off as a competition within the Moray schools district with Elgin, Dyke, Kinloss, Milnes etc all taking part and from there progresses, with the best of the runners competing in the North District championship event usually held at Gordonstoun school, with pupils from anywhere in the North, including, Uist, Shetland and Stornoway competing with the likes of East Sutherland, Ross- Shire, Dingwall, Inverness, Moray, Nairn and Elgin in addition to those from Forres. The winners of this event can then compete in the Scottish Schools national championships in Kirkcaldy (primary) and at Irvine near Glasgow (secondary). Ben Cameron has successfully managed to win the primary schools events for Applegrove in Forres, to compete at the nationals in Kirkcaldy, eventually finishing 10th in his first year in the P7 event, 2nd in his 2nd year in the P7 event and in silver medal position in his final year in the P7 event. The first two years he ran at the older age group because there were insufficient pupils to make up a primary school team at the lower age groups.

This year on a glorious Spring day Ben, his sister Lauren, David Scott and Anna MacFadyen qualified to run at the Scottish Secondary School Championships at Irvine. Ben ran a very closely fought (D) U14 age group event, beating close to 200 boys from all over Scotland and won his first ever National championship title, whilst Anna MacFadyen also of Forres Harriers won her (A) over 17age group event beating close to 70 other girls with relative ease to win her age group championships, not bad going for a small North District school miles from the population rich Central belt.
