Oak and Larch Kinlochewe
Kinlochewe, Ross Shire, Scotland
This very old and gnarly oak tree is near Kinlochewe, it is well sheltered from the wind, if not the rain and snow, it is covered with verdant green moss and dripping with lichen from its gorgeous twisted branches and has a remarkably expansive if naked spherical shape which contrasts very obviously with the tall slender Larch trees that are in the background beyond, unusually this is a shot that works not by contrasting light or colour but by shape, dare I say a bit like Joe Cornish lonely round boulder at Elgol where everything else is triangles or vaguely cubic. It looks best in soft light and the dusting of snow looks great picking up the reflected clear blue sky and offering a cool colour cast intermingled with the softly lit grass.
